Dutchtown, Hamlet in the Town of Chemung, NY
Dutchtown, a hamlet in the Town of Chemung, NY was located in District #3. Contact with the community in the older days was done by a ferry system that crossed the river at the location of the River Brink designation on the map. You can see it listed just about "Dist. No. 3" on the map. In early years, children were ferried across the river in order to attend school. Dutchtown schoolhouse still remains and is a private residence today. The Cemetery has been restored and is readily accessible to the public. The earliest grave was that of the property owner, Samuel Westbrook, who ran the ferry and was a Revolutionary patriot, who died January 16, 1811 at the age of 84 years.

This is an excerpt of a diary written by Emma Pease Wells. Greciantown and Dutchtown were both hamlets within the Town of Chemung, located on St. Rt. 427, (Wilawana Rd). The Middaugh Stand was located 1/2 mile west of the Chemung River Bridge on the left side of the road. Some of the building was saved and today is part of another home located nearby. Property of the Chemung Co. Historical Society.
