Narrows Hill, Locale in the Town of Chemung, New York
Narrows Hill is located west of the town of Chemung proper above the Chemung River and above County Route 60, (Old Rt. 17). Due to the narrow passage between the mountain and the river there was a high risk of ambush, originally by the Seneca tribe of the Iroquois to later when the early settlers came to the Chemung River Valley. The first mail route, pony express, from Waverly to Elmira traveled at the foot of Narrows Hill with the result of many ambushes. To the east of Narrows Hill was the location of the Old Chemung Indian Village. To the west of Narrows Hill is where the New Chemung Indian Village also known as the Iroquois War Town was established. During the General's Sullivan and Clinton Campaign, scouts were sent up over Narrows Hill to spy on the War town. Many more historical accounts were documented of Narrows Hill in the Town of Chemung.
